How it's calculated
Each graded item contributes to your final percentage in proportion to its weight: weighted average = Σ(score × weight) / Σ(weight). Weights don't need to add up to 100 — they're normalized automatically, so you can enter raw point values or percentages either way.
The resulting percentage is mapped to a letter grade using the standard 10-point scale: A for 90% and up, B for 80-89%, C for 70-79%, D for 60-69%, and F below 60%.
Worked example
With homework worth 20% (scoring 92%), a midterm worth 30% (scoring 84%), and a final exam worth 50% (scoring 88%), the weighted average is (92×20 + 84×30 + 88×50) / 100 = 87.6%, which is a B.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do my weights need to add up to 100?
- No. The calculator normalizes your weights automatically, so entering weights that add up to 60 or 150 works the same as entering ones that add up to 100 — only the relative proportions matter.
- Can I enter a score over 100 for extra credit?
- Yes. Extra credit or bonus points that push a score above 100% are included in the weighted average just like any other score.
- What letter-grade scale does this use?
- The standard US 10-point scale: A is 90% and above, B is 80-89%, C is 70-79%, D is 60-69%, and F is below 60%. Some schools use a different scale, so check your syllabus if you need an exact match.
